Kenneth Prewitt was born March 16, 1936, in Alton, Illinois, a son of Carl K. and Louise (Carpenter) Prewitt. He married Anne Biggar on September 6, 1963. He later married Susan Vogel, an art historian and film-maker. He received a BA from Southern Methodist University in 1958; a MA from Washington University 1959; and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1963.
